A CONVERSATION WITH LEONARDO CAIANI

 A CONVERSATION WITH LEONARDO CAIANI

Met during the days working as a hostess at Amarone restaurant in New York, Leonardo surprised me one day with his revelation: "I like to write and I have recently published a novel". Being an avid reader, I absolutely wanted to buy "Seriale", an engaging and easy-to-read thriller set in majestic Florence, Tuscany, Leonardo's native land. After only a few years, Caiani surprises the public once again with a second novel, this time immersed in the skyscrapers of the Big Apple and much closer to the reality that both he and I have been living daily for several years. Leonardo is now a guest of my column, and he talks about himself with his words.

How was your passion for writing born?

The passion for writing was born from the passion for reading.

What was the path that led you to writing your first novel?

After reading so many novels, I realized that I understood the author's intentions. For detective novels, I could understand who the killer was from the very first pages, and this made me realize that I too could create my own story.

Who are the authors you are most inspired by?

Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe and Pirandello.

As a reader of your novels, I appreciated your ability to upset an ordinary situation in an intriguing mystery: did you feel this push in New York or had it happened to you before?

New York is a magical city that can give you something that no other city can give. I wrote many pages on the subway at night after hours of work and I did this only thanks to the push of this city. Also, knowing how to transform an ordinary situation into an intriguing mystery is a specialty of Edgar Allan Poe who, as we know, lived in the Bronx.

What are the biggest difficulties encountered during the drafting of the first book?

The biggest difficulty in the end is always the same: trusting yourself. If you believe in what you do and above all if you believe in yourself you can complete any job.

What are, however, the obstacles that independent writers must overcome during the process of reviewing and publishing a book?

Independent writers do it all by themselves, from the cover to the layout. The real problem is in the revisioning which is always very difficult to do independently.

How do you think the way of publishing books has changed in such a technological society?

With print on demand and the various e-readers, unnecessary inventories are reduced, and online you can find everything and more.

Which of your novels gave you the most personal satisfaction?

The first novel is never forgotten!

Are you currently working on a new book?

Of course! A mysterious patient turns to a famous psychologist from Brooklyn to be able to heal his ailments, but what arises from the sessions will upset the lives of the two.

Many people don't understand how important it is to do research before they can compose a novel to ensure fluidity and credibility; how long did this process last in your experience as a writer?

This process is very important and we are very fortunate nowadays to have the internet always responding to everything. How could I have known how to embalm a corpse !?
