MICRO AND MACRO POVERTY: WHEN THE RICH NEED IT
A few days ago, browsing some Instagram accounts, I came across @sustainabilitychampion a platform promoting people engaged with eco-sustainability and planet protection. Among the hundreds of posts, two of them caught my attention: one was speaking about Olivier de Gruijter and his Jerry can filter, a low cost tool that adapts to any standard jerry can, useful to both provide clean water to those who don't have access to it, and also minimize waste; the second post was dedicated to Salima Visram, Kenyan raised, and her Soular Backpack, a special backpack able to recharge using solar energy and provide children a light source they can utilize in their households after dusk to complete their homework. I then started thinking a lot about my past years spent watching the images coming from Third World countries, and hearing how much developed countries contribute through no profits and fundraisers to help them rise financially and economically. Bullshit! Are we playing stupid or are we genuinely unaware that the richest countries need the rest of the world to keep on lingering in their actual state? Since the 1970's, following the oil price crisis, the debt developing countries were paying off was subject to hyperinflation and higher interest rates. But that's not it: to avoid the risk of seeing the Third World declaring bankruptcy and the population taking their money out of their bank accounts, wealthy nations allowed more loans in exchange for an upfront payment of a quote on the total interests amount, and limits in their sovereignty. Prosperous countries settled and exploited countries of the developing world since the beginning of colonization. Developed countries also love to market some good propaganda in their own favor; I remember reading the story of a journalist visiting Palestine and coming across a sign affixed near a water source by the USA, stating that they were the reason why Palestinians had access to it. The reality was deeply different from the tale told: during the war between Palestine and Israel, the USA allied with Israel and took from Palestinian territory most major water sources. Books could be written about this delicate topic, but it would only result me in a gastric ulcer knowing that there are people in this World who detain so much wealth that could be enough to rebuild the Thirld World entirely, but they rather hide behind fucking no profit organizations. I am not demonizing no profits, but we should stop picturing ourselves as saviors when we barely stretch our fingers to help people in need. There are two things that I hate the most: people growing in poverty, becoming wealthy, buying unnecessary luxury goods to fill their empty ego and totally forgetting the meaning of the word struggle, and also the middle class putting the rich on a pedestal ready to bend over and give their ass away just to get a little taste of the "lifestyle". Shame on you, suckas! I believe we should help the needy without asking for anything in return because, at the end of the day, we're all humans. Martina.
