GEORGE FLOYD: WAS JUSTICE REALLY SERVED?

On April 21st 2021 the now ex Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced for the murder of George Floyd. Last year, the 25th of May marked American history not only because an african-american died by the hand of a white cop, this has unfortunately become a habit in "the land of the free", but for the brutality of the killing: George Floyd is suffocated by Chauvin's kneeling on his neck for nine long and exhausting minutes. Complying after being stopped outside of a corner store and desperately begging for his life repeating "I can't breath", wasn't enough for Floyd to make those dickhead agents spare him from a painful and unnecessary death. Many were the passers-by recording the murder happening right in front of their eyes, and none of them thought that uniting and going all together against four cops or calling 911 to report the events could have maybe saved Floyd from his destiny. The case raised street protests against the racist, corrupted and authoritarian law enforcement. I believe Chauvin should have been held in custody and found guilty immediately after Floyd's autopsy was released listing the cause of death as asphyxiation. Why was almost a year needed for a guilty verdict, and why no real effort was put to stop the conspiracy theories around George Floyd? But mostly, why were many Americans taking the side of a cop on duty with a criminal record, a cop observing the White American Privilege mentality on which the American society itself was built? I'm quite convinced that Chauvin's sentence was necessary to avoid future protests and appease the afro community's anger. Convicting one man is not enough to root out the legal loopholes and the society trickery needed to maintain the white man's economical and social status above the african-american's. Capitalism along with privatized school and healthcare systems will only strenghten the inequalities of a population shaped on colonism and slavery. Thinking that a good portion of white America "fears", without real knowledge of the facts, social structures closer to socialism or communism makes you think. The USA is a great example of the "micro poverty" I introduced in a past blog entry; the rich guarantee the needy the necessary to strive in exchange for some rights: do you want to go to college? Remember that a "decent" college tuition will put you in debt for the rest of your life. Do you need medical attention? Remember that not being able to afford an "acceptable" medical insurance will offer you to be treated at low-standard hospitals and clinics where you will be considered a second-class patient. Remember, my african-american, latino and native-american brothers that this fight for civil rights is not over and that this sentence was the magnitude of a small drop in the ocean: justice is still not served! Thank you all, Martina.
